Exploring Community Connections

May 16th, 2010 · 3 Comments

It can take a while sometimes for things to happen, but they do seem to happen – especially if they are worthwhile.

This morning, we went to feed and water some friends’ day old chicks, and change the temperature on their incubator.  On the way home, we stopped by another friend’s – a bloke who I [...]

Convenience of Community

January 3rd, 2010 · 2 Comments

I received the following email from a member of our local Crop Circle.
I found your AWOL bantam hen and surprise surprise she was sitting on 6 eggs under the bottom of the slippery slide. She is a proud mother of 3 babies so far but is still sitting and your silky has started hatching but [...]

In the (horse) poo again

December 28th, 2009 · No Comments

I cannot believe that it has been more than 2 years since I got some horse manure.
And so it was that yesterday I took my trailer to the place of a friend who is caring for someone else’s three horses.

There we were, two blokes collecting poo, just yabbering in the summer sun.  At one stage, [...]

Why carbon neutral is not enough.

December 27th, 2009 · 2 Comments

I was asked today about being carbon neutral and whether it is better to spend the money on alleviating poverty.
I didn’t really know how to respond, but it did get me thinking about why carbon is not something that I am terribly concerned about.
Now, I don’t know about human-induced, carbon caused, climate change.  Some people [...]

Carbon Accounting – the one year report

September 3rd, 2009 · 1 Comment

Okay, okay.  I know that it has been way over a year since I started Kyle’s Carbon Accounting Method.
The idea of counting up everything for the second 6 months just Was Not At All Appealing, so it has taken until now to do it.
Right, so on with the detail.
Family 12 monthly income: 4 800 carbons
Total [...]

May The Crop Circle be Unbroken

August 14th, 2009 · No Comments

Well, I’ll be darned.
The whole crop circle idea has taken off. We had a yarn today and with about 60 families involved, we have decided to become an incorporated association, with a real rubber stamp and everything!
Dreams can come true.

Whither the personal reduction in an Emissions Trading Scheme

February 23rd, 2009 · 4 Comments

Hmmmm. I have been thinking on Australia’s imminent Emissions Trading Scheme, and I have a number of ideas, but am yet to come to a conclusion..
Can someone please tell me what the point is of reducing my own emissions if we have an emissions trading scheme?

Confronted by the new carbon economy.

June 29th, 2008 · 3 Comments

One of the four goals of FairShareInternational is:
10: tread lightly
Reducing my use of water, energy and minerals by at least 10%, based on the national average per capita consumption. [this is 10% per year until you can go no further]
Now, I’ve been plugging along at this for a few years, and recent results [...]

What’s in a name?

May 15th, 2008 · 1 Comment

I mentioned in my last post that we are starting up a group to share surplus produce, seeds, plants, breads etc.
The dilemma we are having at the moment – and what a great life we must have if this is the biggest concern we have – what to call it….
Any ideas?

Building community is like building soil.

May 13th, 2008 · No Comments

I like seeds.  I like how they grow from an itsy bitsy thing into a whole big and bountiful thing.
I think I like community for the same reason.

Just like it’s often better to delay sowing a seed until the soil is sufficiently fertile, the same it often is with ideas.
Over a year ago I started [...]
