About Bryan

100_0438.JPG

MY FAIR SHARE is a weblog on the subject of living; trying to distinguish between using and misusing, to balance ignorance and arrogance, to learn what to unlearn and what to learn anew, to blend the past with the present to choose actions that might just lead to a preferred future.
It revolves mostly about the author’s attempts to make ethical life choices within an affluent community, by attempting to enact the 5.10.5.10 goals of Australian group, FairShareInternational:

5: reject greed

10: tread lightly

5: connect with (the bright side of) community

10: build up democracy

The author is Bryan West, 36 years old, husband, father, student, teacher & deputy principal (on leave to look after kids and complete a thesis). He likes gardening, woodwork and cooking, reading, cycling and slow cups of tea, but mostly just spending time with his family. He lives in a small town in Australia’s dry tropics with his wife, 2 year old daughter, 1 year old son, 6 chooks and various interlopers.

Pam is right you are a genius or at the least very wise but I’m glad about the slow cups of tea because you have a wonderful if rather busy life

    Hi Bryan,

I am writing to congratulate you on this blog and the fact you managed to dedicate some time to it. I for one (with 3 kids 6, 4 and 1.5), with a full time job struggle to do anything of the sort. Having said that, we compost, send all scrap edibles to the 5 NEXT DOOR chooks.

Another thing you may have possibly left out of the analysis is the concept of something above us eg GOD. Yeah, its great to look after the planet, and the others that live in it – thats obvious, but what about the extra dimension beyond our naked eyes, and our graves. That would put an even more acute spin to 5 10 5 10 because it would be what God wants as well. Just a thought (and I am not a fanatic).

Yeah, alright. I’m 37 now. Pray, how old are you this year? Is it … 40?

    Hi Bryan,
Have enjoyed skimming over your website. Will have to read over it in more detail. Love the concept of what you are doing. Lawrence de Costa has a good point. Where are you up to in your search for God? I still remember the discussions that we had many years ago as we “browsed through galleries and killed things”.
    Regards
    Nick

Hi Bryan: I am so sorry for my role in the bruhaha on Riot and so sorry that you left. I am reading the posts but am not participating in discussions at this point. This has been a wonderful (and terrible!) learning experience for me. I wish you all the best. I loved your voice and presence. (Cannot spell!) Vivian

Hello down there, Bryan: I ran across your site while using Stumble and thought I’d send you kudos for the wetland project. I am longing to do something of the such here in Kentucky, but am finding obstacles with everything from dealing with city ordinances, the physics of water and what to do about winter freezes. Good luck to you on all of your adventures!
